Current Status of Korean Displays In the past, major domestic display panel companies in Korea, which maintained the top position in the global display market share, handed over the crown of world display market dominance to China due to the onslaught of low-cost LCD from China (as of 2021). Anticipating this situation, Korean companies such as LG Electronics and Samsung Display have been attempting to transition from LCD to OLED, QLED, Mini LED, MicroLED, and other technologies. However, Samsung Display started early consolidation of small and medium-sized LCD production lines since 2016 [2] and focused on supplying small OLEDs to the high-end smartphone market as a strategic move. On the other hand, LG Display faced consecutive losses in the fourth quarter of 2023 after ceasing its domestic LCD TV panel factory operations in 2022 [3,4]. In the current year, the Chinese panel manufacturer BOE faced issues with Holddisplay processing, leading to a disruption in the supply of OLED panels for iPhone 15. In contrast, Korean panel manufacturers are expected to stably supply LTPO TFT-based OLED panels, allowing for increased panel shipments. LTPO: Short for Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, it is a technology where one transistor in the TFT process is changed to an oxide. Oxide transistors can be operated with a higher refresh rate and lower refresh rate in static pixels, allowing for a simultaneous implementation of both high and low refresh rates.
